They are the first to study national defense as an optional subject in schools.
In addition to theoretical knowledge of Latvia and its history, the principles of democracy and civic participation, students also had to strengthen their practical skills – ordinary training, shooting, orienteering, field fighting skills and communication.
The national defense training pilot project in 13 Latvian schools was started in 2018. Currently, about 1,000 young people study it in 53 Latvian schools.
Starting from 2024, it is planned to introduce national defense education as a compulsory subject in all state secondary education institutions. It is planned that around 30,000 young people will learn it a year, while the best will be able to test their practical skills in the camps – about 2,000-3,000 students.
