Izmir / Samos Turkey and Greece were hit by a strong earthquake with an epicenter in the Aegean Sea on Friday. According to the Turkish side, the strength was 6.6 degrees, the US authorities set the strength at 7.0 on the Richter scale.

The mayor of Izmir Turk estimated more damage than Soyl’s interior minister. “At least 20 buildings in Izmir have been destroyed,” he told CNN. Other buildings also collapsed in the Bornov and Bayrakli districts, according to Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soyle on Twitter. The number of victims is unknown. “Our teams are continuing to inspect the terrain,” Soylu said.

The hearth was located 13 kilometers north of the Greek island of Samos, which is a popular holiday destination. The inhabitants of Athens and Istanbul also felt the tremors.

Videos from people who witnessed the tremors began to appear on social networks.

İzmir suffered the greatest damage in Turkey. According to Reuters, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said that there were no casualties in six other Turkish provinces where the earthquake was also felt. However, cracks also appeared in some buildings.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wished the city an early recovery on Twitter. Smyrna (Turkish: İzmir) is a city in western Turkey on the Aegean coast. It has a population of about three million and is the administrative center of İzmir Province.

On the Greek side, one of the most affected places is the town of Karlovasi located on the island of Samos. Te is located in the eastern part of the Aegean Sea near the coast of Asia Minor. Together with the surrounding small islands, it forms the village of the same name belonging to the Greek region of North Aegean.

Other images and social media footage captured first a massive outflow of water from the coast and then a smaller flood wave that swept through the streets of Izmir. Middle East Eye correspondent Ragıp Soylu shared a look at the flooded streets on Twitter:

Greece lies in a seismically active area, earthquakes are relatively common there. In September, a strong earthquake hit the island of Crete, where it caused only property damage. The last earthquake with casualties of 6.7 magnitudes hit the island of Kos near Turkey in July 2017. Two people died then. A magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Athens killed 143 people in 1999.

Turkey has had several devastating earthquakes – in 1999, more than 17,000 people lost their lives in Izmit in the west of the country with 7.6 magnitudes and half a million citizens lost their roofs. An earthquake in Van in 2011 killed more than 520 people. A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Elazig in January this year, killing more than 40 people. The last earthquake, in which one person died, affected the eastern part of the country in June this year.
