Argentines and Argentines celebrated the passage of the two parts of Congress (Parliament and Senate) on Thursday to the abortion law, a law that has deeply divided public opinion since its introduction, in a country where the Catholic Church enjoys wide influence.
Before the vote, thousands of activists supporting the abortion law gathered near Congress headquarters in the capital, and were met by opponents of it. On Friday, the right-wing populist Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, who is the leader of the largest Catholic country in Latin America, condemned the decision.
Bolsonaro criticized Argentina’s decision to legalize abortion, describing the matter as giving a country “its consent” to the killing of children.
