(VIDEO) This is the flight over a huge Martian crater full of ice

Located on the Great Northern Plain of the red planet, the Korolev crater is a depression more than 80 kilometers wide and almost 2 kilometers deep that contains a large permanent ice cap all year round.

This mass does not melt during the Martian summer because the great ice plain creates a ‘cold trap’ that cools the air moving above it, causing it to descend and form a ‘cold shield’ on its surface.

This landscape can now be seen in a video created from five separate image strips captured in 2018 by the European Space Agency’s Mars Express probe, which has been orbiting Mars for the past 17 years. The images, taken by a high-resolution stereo camera (HRSC), made it possible to create a mosaic to show the crater as it would be seen by human eyes.

The crater is named after Sergei Koroliov, considered the ‘father’ of the Soviet space program and responsible for sending the first satellite and the first man into space, among many other scientific advances.
