The Villeneuve-d’Ascq museum, in the North, is preparing an exhibition on the secrets of Modigliani. Scientists scanned his paintings and discovered two paintings in one.

Art experts have scrutinized Modigliani’s paintings kept in French public collections using the most advanced techniques.
The portrait of his dealer Paul Guillaume has been dissected layer after layer. “We discover things that the artist has hidden from us, we have the impression of entering the studio, in the secret of the making“, explains Marie-Amélie Senot, art historian. The images reveal that the artist had painted a first face before turning the table over and painting his companion nestled in an armchair. She was identified thanks to another drawing closely resembling the engulfed work.
Analysis of the paintings of Modigliani, who died in 1920 at the age of only 35, also reveals that the artist was a great colourist: he sometimes mixed a dozen powders to obtain the desired shade.
Secrets to be discovered in an exhibition prepared by the LAM, the Villeneuve-d’Ascq museum (North), when it can once again open its doors.
