VIDEO- Sales: a computer bug is wreaking havoc with televisions … at 30 euros

Cries, jostling, shouting, queues at a stop that never stop getting longer, the police forced to intervene to prevent things from escalating, and hypermarkets closing their doors at 1 a.m. instead of 9:30 pm … This happened on Wednesday January 8, the first day of sales, in Géant Casino hypermarkets in Montpellier and nine other stores. The cause: a problem with the display of prices in the appliance and hi-fi departments.

A product was particularly torn off, after Internet users spread the word via social networks during the afternoon: 55-inch (140 cm) televisions sold at a price of 30.99 euros instead of 439.99 euros, or more than 90% reduction! Problem: arrived at the cash desk of the TVs full in their shopping carts, customers were faced with an end of non-reception by the cashiers, having been instructed to refuse to make purchases at the prices displayed. The hard-hitting of many of these customers ended up causing the aforementioned mess.

It is the brand, completely overwhelmed, who called on the police, the time to calm the spirits and correct all of its labels in the evening … But by the way, were the customers entitled to leave with these televisions at bargain prices? Article L211-A of Consumer Code is formal: “In the event of a labeling error, the clause is interpreted in the sense most favorable to consumers.” Except … if a price appears very singularly low, in which case “the consumer is considered to be normally informed and therefore cannot claim to consider that it is the real value of the product”. Especially in this case, the labels indicated, in addition to the prices, a reduction of 30%, and not 93%.
