Video: Photorealistic graphics in the new horror dev diary Project: Mara from the creators of Hellblade

Last year Ninja Theory announced an experimental psychological horror game called Project: Mara. Since then, there has been no news about the game, but yesterday the studio showed off the technology it uses in horror and other future projects.

The demo took place as part of the third episode of The Dreadnought Diaries series, which details what the Ninja Theory teams are working on. The new issue tells about the technologies and artistic processes used in the creation of Project: Mara.

Director Tameem Antoniades explained that Project: Mara takes place in a real-life apartment. Ninja Theory has devoted a lot of time to re-creating the room (dimensions, materials, lighting) with photorealistic detail, which has been achieved thanks to the most modern technologies.

In collaboration with Clear Angle Studios, Antoniades’ team was able to use “Point cloud of the whole apartment” (up to “Every little thing”) to create a digital representation of the real-world space shown in the trailer above. After that, the team began to apply procedural tools to add to the apartment “Signs of life”: dust, wear and tear and other organic elements were superimposed on the copy of the room.

It is still unknown when and on what platforms Project: Mara will be released. Ninja Theory is also working on an action-adventure game Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and program development The Insight Project, in which the studio explores combining games with the study of mental health problems.
