New Zealand is apparently planning one of the strictest cigarette bans in the world. Young people should be banned from buying cigarettes in their lifetime. This should apply to young people who are 14 years of age or younger – when the regulation is to come into force in 2027. Other measures to curb smoking were taking too long, the Ministry of Health said. The authorities pay particular attention to the Maori population. The proportion of smokers is particularly high among them. The plans meet with approval: “I think it’s a good move. Because right now a lot of young people are walking around with cigarettes in their mouths. The public wonders where they got these cigarettes from. And it’s good for me too, because I can then save more money. ” “It should be banned altogether. And if people still want to smoke, they can just grow their own tobacco, which is what they do.” “I think it’s a good idea because after all, smoking is bad for you and it’s really hard to quit. Since I’m a smoker myself and have been through it all, I know that.” The ban is to be enshrined in law by the end of 2022. How the ban should be controlled remained open at first. With its strict restrictions, New Zealand lies just behind Bhutan, where the sale of cigarettes is completely banned.
