29-year-old homeless man charged on Friday night for the knife attack the day before who injured the muezzin in London’s central mosque, police said. The suspect, Daniel Horton, is being charged with serious bodily harm and possession of a sharp object, Scotland Yard said in a statement. The facts are not considered at this stage to be of a “terrorist nature”.

Brought to justice mid-day Saturday, he was detained until the next hearing in a month. The victim, in his 70s, was released from the hospital on Friday. “I forgive him. I’m sorry for him, ”said muezzin Raafat Maglad to the press. “What is done is done, he cannot go back,” he added, indicating that he had a deep gash in his neck.

Boris Johnson is “saddened”

The muezzin, responsible for calling to prayer, was assaulted Thursday afternoon at the mosque near Regent’s Park, in the heart of the British capital. “He hit me, I felt blood flow from my neck, and lo and behold, they took me to the hospital. Everything happened very quickly, “added Raafat Maglad, adding that he had already seen his attacker at the mosque.

A witness to the attack said that the suspect had been a regular at the place of worship, where he was seen at least six months ago. “The assailant was arrested by the faithful until the police arrived and arrested him,” the mosque said in a statement on its website.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter “deeply saddened” by the attack.

The mayor of the capital, Sadiq Khan, a Muslim, said he was “deeply concerned” by the incident and announced patrols of additional police officers in the neighborhood where the attack occurred.
