Search Continues for Missing Hiker as Police Confirm Two Deaths in Victorian High Country
Victoria, Australia – Police are continuing a search operation in Victoria’s high country after confirming the deaths of two women, believed to have been in the area for two or three days. The discovery was made near Mount Feathertop on Monday, prompting a wider investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The tragic incident underscores the inherent risks of remote hiking, especially as search efforts are hampered by challenging terrain and weather conditions. The confirmation of the deaths has prompted renewed warnings from authorities regarding preparedness and safety protocols for those venturing into Victoria’s wilderness areas.Police are currently working to formally identify the women and notify their families.
Authorities initiated the search after receiving reports of a missing hiker on Sunday. The search expanded Monday, leading to the discovery of the two deceased women. While the cause of death is yet to be determined, police stated there are no suspicious circumstances at this time.
“The terrain is quite challenging up there, and the weather conditions haven’t been ideal for searching,” a victoria Police spokesperson said. “We are doing everything we can to locate any other individuals who may have been with the group and to piece together what happened.”
The search area encompasses a meaningful portion of the Alpine National Park, a popular destination for bushwalking and hiking. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the missing hiker or the deceased women to come forward. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
