‘Very well preserved’ bodies found of deceased resident …

Archaeologists in Pompeii have found exceptionally well-preserved bodies of two men. It concerns a rich man and presumably a slave. They died from the heat and volcanic ash when the volcano Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.

The remains of the two victims were found in a large villa on the outskirts of Pompeii, in Civita Giuliana. It is located about 700 meters northwest of the old center of Pompeii.

According to the archaeologists, it is a rich man and a slave. Thus, the high-status man appeared to be between 30 and 40 years old. He still wore traces of a woolen cloak around his neck. The second man, probably between the ages of 18 and 23, was dressed in a tunic and had some shattered vertebrae, suggesting that he had been a hard-working slave.

Casts were made of the remains, using the special technique of pouring liquid plaster into the cavity left by the body in the solidified layer of ash that covered it. Thus emerge as ‘statues’, captured in the attitude in which they perished.

Pompeii is a Roman city that was buried under volcanic ash and debris due to an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. The ruins were discovered in the sixteenth century, the first excavations started in 1748. At the time of the eruption, about 13,000 people lived in the city. The world famous archaeological site is currently closed to tourists due to the corona pandemic.
