by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Venus Williams,at 45,has defied expectations with a remarkable singles victory at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, defeating the 35th-ranked Peyton Stearns in straight sets,6-3,6-4. This win, her frist since August 2023, positions her as the second-oldest woman to achieve a tour-level singles match victory.

The tennis icon’s resurgence follows a period where she was listed as inactive, underscoring her enduring competitive spirit. Williams expressed the meaning of the win, acknowledging the challenges inherent in the sport: “This means a lot. It’s not easy out there.”

Inspired by Fiancé

Williams credited her fiancé, Italian actor andrea Preti, for his encouragement to persevere. “He really pushed me to keep playing,” she stated. “There were times I wanted to slow down. This life,it’s not easy. You’re running, lifting, sweating nonstop. It’s brutal. But he supported me through it.” This marked Preti’s first live attendance at one of her matches.

Preti is recognized for his roles in productions such as “Temptation,” “A Professor,” and “My Beloved Enemy.”

Looking Ahead

Williams’ participation in the Mubadala Citi DC Open continues as she is scheduled to compete against the fifth-seeded Magdalena Frech, aged 27, on Thursday. Additionally, she will compete in doubles alongside Hailey Baptiste, 23, following their initial success as a pair.
