Venice suffers the third worst tidal surge in June

Rome – A quarter of Venice It has been submerged by an almost record high tide in June, a time of year when this type of flooding is not common.

The water level in Canal City reached 3 feet 9.7 inches on Thursday night, the third-worst mark in a June month. This indicates that around a quarter of the city has been flooded.

The agency monitoring the water level in Venice blamed the unusual flood on a storm that caused strong winds and rains in the north of Italy. Another flood is expected on Friday night.

The highest tide in a month of June was recorded in 2002, when the water reached 121 centimeters, followed by a 117 in 2016.

Venice authorities did not install the pedestrian walkways on Friday, which are only used in the “high water” season between September and April.

Venice and the rest of the country remain closed to cruise tourism, but Italy relaxed travel restrictions for Italians and most European citizens on Wednesday.
