Venezuela’s situation is not “a narrative construction,” says Boric

Lectures: 222

President Gabriel Boric pointed out that he was happy about the return of Venezuela to multilateral instances, where various problems that afflict the countries can be resolved, however, he stated that he disagreed with the comments about the human rights situation in Venezuela described by the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Boric has made it clear that welcoming Nicolás Maduro does not mean endorsing the situation regarding human rights: “The truth is that we are happy that Venezuela returns to multilateral instances because we believe that it is in these spaces where problems are solved and not with statements where we just attack each other.”

It should be remembered that the leaders of a dozen countries in the region met in Brasilia at the invitation of the Brazilian president, Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva, who intends to recover Brazil’s active role in regional affairs.

The president added that: “That, however, cannot mean sweeping under the rug or turning a blind eye to issues that for us are principled and important,” when expressing his disagreement with President Lula that the situation of Human rights in Venezuela is a “narrative construction” by stating that: “It is not a narrative construction, it is a reality.”

President Boric added that he respectfully told President Lula in the presence of Nicolás Maduro that he disagreed with his words that “the human rights situation in Venezuela is a narrative construction. It is not”.

Lula da Silva, leader of the Brazilian left, has been widely criticized in his nation for defending that accusations of authoritarianism or lack of democracy are part of an enemy narrative.

The Summit of the Countries of South America has brought together 12 South American presidents in which it is proposed to reconstruct the integration agenda above ideologies.

South American leaders finished a first work session, after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva inaugurated this Tuesday, May 30, 2023, the summit with a message in favor of the integration of the region.
