Vatican argues with Microsoft for face recognition regulation | NOW

The Vatican joined forces with tech giants Microsoft and IBM on Friday to better regulate face recognition. In addition, the three parties want to promote the ethical development of artificial intelligence (AI).

The parties believe that artificial intelligence must guarantee privacy and human rights and must operate in a transparent and reliable manner.

They have therefore met in Rome and signed a document stating, among other things, that new forms of regulation should be encouraged. “In particular for advanced technologies that have a greater risk of damaging human rights, such as face recognition.”

Pope Francis supports the call of the three parties, but was not present at the signing of the document due to illness.

The Vatican often interferes with technology. The Pope argued in December to put away the smartphone more often and to have conversations with family instead. The Vatican also called its own in early 2019 app in life where people can pray with the Pope.
