Van Ranst again in the clinch with a French-speaking colleague

Virologist Marc Van Ranst has once again wiped out his Brussels colleague Jean-Luc Gala on Twitter. The latter yesterday minimized the Brussels corona figures, called the current corona measures “too strict” and criticized the “threatening way of working” of some experts, with which he aimed at Van Ranst. This afternoon he answered him.

It was a tweet from VUB professor of General Practice Dirk Devroey that started the discussion again. “Never before has the Brussels Region had so many cases per week: 1,003”, he wrote in a telling graph. “During the first wave it was a maximum of 985 per week.”

Van Ranst responded to this. “The number of hospitalizations is also on the rise,” he tweeted. “Half of the new hospitalizations in our country take place in the Brussels municipalities. It does not help that a Brussels infectiologist like Jean-Luc Gala says that he ‘does not see the slightest sign of a second corona wave’, that there is ‘no increase in the number of Covid patients’ and that ‘the measures are destroying our economy needlessly’. ”

According to Van Ranst, more than a third of the Covid patients in our country (102 out of 303) are in a Brussels hospital (figures from 20 August). And of the 82 patients in intensive care, a total of 26 are in Brussels. “It is a health-threatening strategy to minimize the Brussels figures,” he says bluntly.
