Willem van Hanegem is curious about the coming international match, but is a bit done with the way national coach Louis van Gaal presents himself. The Dutch national team is competing for placement for the 2022 World Cup and De Kromme still estimates Orange higher than Norway, Montenegro and Turkey.
Van Hanegem will sit down for it, he writes in his weekly column for the General Newspaper. “But there is also something in me that is a bit upsetting,” he refers to the recently returned national coach. “Louis van Gaal has talked about himself since his appointment, hasn’t he? And that won’t stop anytime soon. Wouldn’t there be someone who now and then says: Louis, take it easy?’
Van Gaal considers himself the ideal man for the job, is a statement that has been quoted regularly. “That’s why I was also surprised that he then pretended that we are facing three very tough matches,” he said The Curve, who thinks that The Netherlands must be able to beat the three rivals. “We still have great players. Nor are Norway, Montenegro and Turkey leading countries in Europe.’
The Orange squad opens the triptych on September 1 in Oslo and then receives Montenegro (September 4) and Turkey (September 7) in Eindhoven and Amsterdam respectively. Turkey is the leader in Group G after three of the ten rounds, with one point ahead of the Netherlands, Norway and Montenegro. The number one in the group goes directly to the World Cup, the number two plays the play-offs.
