Van Gogh’s painting was sold at auction for more than 340 million crowns. For over a hundred years he lay hidden in a private collection Culture

Paris The painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, which was hidden in a private collection for over 100 years, was sold for approximately 13 million euros (340 million crowns) in a repeated auction in Paris on Thursday. In the first round, which had to take place again due to a technical error, the applicant auctioned the work for 14 million euros (367 million crowns). Reuters reported that people in the online auction could also bid from New York and Hong Kong.

The Sotheby’s auction house stated that there was a problem with the electronic bidding during the auction. The final price of the sold work called Street Scene in Montmartre decreased to 13.1 million euros (342 million crowns) including fees after the auction was repeated. Sotheby’s set the estimated price in advance at five to eight million euros (131 to 210 million crowns).

“Very few of Van Gogh’s paintings from his Montmartre period remain in private hands, most of the series are now in the possession of prestigious museum collections around the world,” said Aurélie Vandevoorde, Sotheby’s representative. Van Gogh painted the painting in 1887 when he lived in the French capital with his brother Theo. The painting depicts a trapped couple walking along a corral in front of the legendary Pepper Mill, which stood on the Montmartre hill in Paris. It has been in a private family collection since about 1920, and now it is the first time it has been exhibited in public.

Van Gogh spent two years in Paris. He left the city in 1888, when he ate the hectic pace of life in the metropolis. He then moved to southern France, where he cut off part of his ear in a fit of madness. In 1890 he committed suicide near Paris.
