Van Gerwen and Noppert die with the Netherlands in the quarterfinals | Darts

sport">Noppert lost the first singles match 4-3 to Clemens, and therefore Van Gerwen had to win his match against Hopp to keep the Orange ‘alive’. That worked, Van Gerwen won 4-1. As a result, a third match, a so-called matching match, was necessary to determine who went to the semi-final.

sport">And the Germans won the prize. Via two finishes by Noppert, the Netherlands did take a 2-0 lead, but the Germans tied the score and even came to 3-2. Again Van Gerwen kept Orange alive by winning the sixth leg.

Six German match darts

sport">In the decisive seventh leg, Hopp first got three match darts on tops, but he failed. After that Van Gerwen left one match dart (also on tops). The sixth German match dart finally went in via Clemens.

sport">Van Gerwen received ‘medical assistance’ on Sunday afternoon, because he had got up in the morning with back pain. Mighty Mike turned out to be fit enough to play. If Van Gerwen dropped out due to back problems, the Netherlands should have left the tournament. In that case, Germany had one walk-over to the semi-final against Wales. The Netherlands beat Spain and Brazil earlier in the tournament.

sport">Together with Raymond van Barneveld, Van Gerwen won the World Cup of Darts three times. Since last season Mighty Mike however do it with another partner. Last year he formed a duo with Jermaine Wattimena, with whom he was killed in the semi-final against Ireland.
