Van driver died after collision with freight train near Hengelo | NOW

A driver of a delivery van died on Sunday after a collision with a freight train on an unguarded level crossing near Zenderen, in Overijssel, between Almelo and Hengelo. That is reported by the police. The train driver was released with a fright.

After the collision, the vehicle was dragged hundreds of meters away, according to the police. As a result of the impact, the identity of the driver cannot yet be established. The accident happened at around 5.40 pm on the Zeilkerweg.

Several emergency services are on site and the train traffic between Almelo and Hengelo has been stopped. The police and rail operator ProRail are investigating how the accident could have happened. According to ProRail, the train did not transport any dangerous goods.

Train passengers on the congested route can use fast and stop buses, the Dutch Railways reports.

ProRail is busy securing or removing all 180 unguarded level crossings, because they entail dangerous situations. The cabinet allocated 25 million euros for this last summer.
