Van der Gijp: Ueda’s Slow Action Shocked Him After Feyenoord Loss

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Former Footballer René van der Gijp expressed surprise at the performance of ⁣Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda‌ during Sunday’s 2-3 ⁣loss to PSV in the Eredivisie.

Van der Gijp shared his observations during the kieftjansenegmondgijp podcast,‍ noting he appreciated the competitive balance of⁢ the ⁢match despite PSV’s slight edge in quality. While ‌PSV’s Ismael Saibari, who scored a hat-trick, ‌stood out, van der Gijp‌ was‌ notably critical of Ueda’s play.”What really shocked me yesterday was Ueda’s speed of action. That really shocked me,” he stated.

Wim Kieft concurred, referencing ‌an early play where Ueda entered the PSV‌ penalty⁢ area, attempted to turn inward, adn lost possession. “I had a much more feeling ‍that ⁤he liked it and ⁤thought:‍ this is my moment. Because after three minutes he has to play it, right?” Kieft explained, suggesting Ueda may‍ have been overly confident.”When you are a striker, you sometimes think: okay, I’m in a good ‌period, today is going⁤ to be something. And then you are very fixated on that. You often miss the overview,” he added.

The pair also questioned the impact of Sem Steijn, who began the match on the bench. Van der Gijp stated, “I think Steijn is ⁤too old to take another step. I don’t think that will happen anymore,” a sentiment Kieft echoed, observing that Steijn’s “speed of action is suddenly slow…Now that he is at Feyenoord.”
