Van den Brom hurts for a long time: Club Brugge wins cup thriller after penalties

For the KRC Genk trainer Johan van den Brom’s cup adventure is over. In return for Club Brugge twice gave it a lead and in the end Blauw-Zwart saved it after penalties: Noa Lang of course decided the penalty series.

Club Brugge had already won against Genk in the competition on Sunday. On Wednesday evening it was 3-3 after ninety minutes of play. Éder Álvarez opened the scoring in favor of the visitors early in the game, Kristian Thorsvedt equalized after half an hour. Genk then took the lead twice via Joseph Paintsil, but both goals from the Ghanaian were canceled by Charles De Ketelaere (photo).

Ruud Vormer had to make way in extra time and Bas Dost just came in, but no more goals were scored. Dost opened the penalty shootout with a good bet, Patrik Hrosovský missed the first on behalf of Genk, after which The Smurfs were behind the times. Club Brugge remained clear and Lang finally executed the verdict.

For Van den Brom, the cup elimination is the next downer. Last season’s number two has to do it in the current Jupiler Pro League-year with a tenth place, five points away from the places that entitle them to the championship play-offs.
