Valncia receives 50,000 gift masks from a Chinese city with which they twinned eight years ago

“In common misadventures, minds are reconciled and friendships are strengthened.” This is the phrase that accompanies the 50,000 masks that the Chinese city of Guangzhou has given València, twin cities since 2012 and now united again in the disgrace of the coronavirus. The Mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, has highlighted solidarity between cities beyond borders and ensures that there are contacts with other sister cities in the capital of Turia.

According to municipal sources, the shipment arrived from Thursday to Friday from China to the El Prat airport in Barcelona, because it is the city that has an air connection between Spain and that city, capital of the province of Canton (Guangdon) located to the south of the People’s Republic.

In less than 24 hours, the material has been transferred to València and once in the city, both the mayor, Joan Ribó, and the deputy mayors Sandra Gómez and Sergi Campillo, have verified receipt of the shipment. These are high protection FFP2 masks that will be used to protect the municipal services that work on the front line.

Contacts between the two cities began a few weeks ago. Guangzhou and Valencia contacted each other to check the situation in both cities as a result of the pandemic. Communication was made by telephone and by email.

The Mayor’s Office was interested in learning about the situation in the Chinese city and pointed out the main concerns of Valencia: the health of the city’s residents, the economic repercussions of the health crisis and the effects on the most vulnerable families.
As a result of these conversations, this dispatch has taken place and this week the mayor of Valencia and Guangzhou, Wen Guohui, will hold a videoconference to discuss the situation and to thank the collaboration.

“Town twinning is more than a symbolic act. Guangzhou has demonstrated this and I want to show my gratitude as mayor and representing all of Valencia. The Chinese city has sent us a shipment with 50,000 FFP2 masks and at the moment the fact of being interested in our situation and attending to our concerns is an indication of the involvement and solidarity of the people of Guangzhou towards Valencians and Valencians. Beyond borders, from one part of the planet to another, with this terrible pandemic we learn the values of walking together, because humanity depends on joint actions and brotherhood among peoples. Only in this way will we be able to overcome challenges like the one we are experiencing, “Ribó said in statements to this newspaper.

The city of Valencia is twinned with 3 Chinese cities: Guangzhou, Xian and Chengdu, in addition to Mainz (Germany), Bologna (Italy), Odessa (Ukraine), Valencia (Venezuela) and Veracruz (Mexico).
Currently, contacts are also being maintained with the rest of the twinned cities and future collaborations among them are not ruled out to meet the needs of the pandemic, regardless of the common projects that may exist.
