Valncia prohibits the feast of Saint John

The Valencia City Council yesterday announced the ban on all activity on the beach on the night of San Juan, one of the most anticipated and busiest of the year. The reason is not being able to guarantee the safety of people in the middle of the coronavirus epidemic, so a strong police device will be mounted that will prevent people from accessing the arena.

The announcement was made yesterday by the deputy mayor and spokesman for the municipal government, Sergi Campillo, who explained that the measure had been adopted in the Covid-19 Follow-up Commission held yesterday. In his opinion, it is the “most prudent” option in the face of the current health crisis. “It was the wisest course this year,” said the mayor, “considering that this is a celebration that could be massive and that the Fallas, scheduled for July, and other festivals” in the city have been suspended.

Likewise, the municipal manager explained that the Department of Citizen Protection is working on the preparation of “a special Local Police device” to ensure that there is no bonfire or celebration on the beaches of the Valencian capital in San Juan. In addition to this operation, a “small” cleaning device will be added “in case there is any clueless”.

Surveillance will be applied to all the beaches of València, but especially to the urban ones, in the north, since the celebration of San Juan is always prohibited in the south because it is close to or within the natural park of La Albufera.

The Councilor for Citizen Protection, Aarón Cano, explained to this newspaper that the device will be important and that those who bypass the ban will be punished.

At this time, according to what he said, the legal teams are working on a formula that allows blocking access to the beach and imposing fines. “Keep in mind that on the 21st the alarm can end and on the 23rd it can be a normal day in which you cannot forbid a person to go to the beach to get their feet wet. You can prohibit them from making bonfires because that is not a prohibition but an exception to an existing norm, but you cannot tell them not to enter the arena, ”explained Cano, who assures that this directive will be ready in the coming weeks.

“What people have to be clear about is that this year there is no San Juan on the beach and that there will be sanctions,” explained the councilor for Citizen Protection, who was concerned with the device because “it is more difficult to prevent a flow of people than regulate it ».

València’s decision already has antecedents in other towns of the Community. The mayor of Gandia, Diana Morant, has also announced this week the suspension of San Juan as she cannot guarantee security.
