One of the leading public health experts said of the trial the COVID-19 vaccine it is not currently designed to help reduce mortality for susceptible patients.
Peter Doshi, expert and assistant professor of pharmaceutical health services research at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, said of the vaccine trials COVID-19 currently being done is only done to evaluate mild cases.
“There is no vaccine trial designed to detect a significant reduction in hospital patients, receiving intensive care, or death,” Doshi wrote in the medical journal BMJ. CNA News, Thursday (22/10/2020).
“This study appears to be designed to answer the easiest questions in a short period of time, not the most clinically relevant questions,” he continued.
Doshi said, this might depend on the number of people involved in the trial. According to him, these trials show that most confirmed COVID-19 infections consist of mild or no symptoms.
If anything, there may be only a few of these trials designed to find out if this could benefit the elderly or people at risk.
According to Doshi, if the vulnerable and elderly volunteers are not included in the trial, there will be little basic evidence about the vaccine. Even the benefits of the vaccine will be doubted in reducing the number of treatments and deaths.
The large number of people excluded from this trial may prevent vaccines from understanding how COVID-19 develops in different ways between individuals.
“After the influenza vaccination routinely recommended for people aged 65 years or over in the United States, we still don’t know whether vaccination has been successful in reducing mortality,”
“Without definitive randomized trial evidence, the debate will continue. Unless, if we act now, we run the risk of repeating this sad situation with the COVID-19 vaccine.”
In the midst of many countries hoping for a vaccine to be available soon, Doshi is just hoping and waiting that they can end the pandemic.
