Vaccine fraud in India: Thousands were vaccinated with saline

– They used saline and injected it. They did this at every fake vaccination station, said Vishal Thakur, a senior official in the Mumbai Police Department.

It writes CNN.

At least 12 fake vaccination stations have been registered near Mumbai in India, in the western part of the country’s Maharashtra.

According to Thakur, a private hospital was used, where fake certificates, vials and syringes were produced.

Charged the victims with fees

Both doctors and health workers have now been arrested for being involved in the sale of counterfeit coronary vaccines.

About 2,500 people have been vaccinated with fake vaccines. Those behind the fraud charged their victims with fees for the injections, and earned up to 239,000 kroner in total.

One of the fake vaccination stations took place in a residential community.

– None of our residents got any symptoms, and we also had to pay in cash. At the time, we doubted it , says a resident, according to News18.

Suspicious vaccination certificate

The fake vaccination stations are said to have been used in late May and early June.

After some of the fraud victims became suspicious of the vaccination certificates they had received, they reported it to the police, and the authorities started the investigation.

So far, 14 people have been arrested on suspicion of cheating, attempted murder, criminal conspiracy and other charges. Police are currently investigating other people involved in the scam, and several arrests may occur.

New powerful corona wave

When the public prosecutor confirmed that there were more than 2,000 victims of the scam, the Bombay High Court called on state and local authorities to take action to prevent more innocents from being deceived in the future.

India was hit hard by a new corona wave between April and early June. Millions were infected, and tens of thousands across the country died as a result of the virus.

After reaching a new peak of infection in May, the infection situation has improved. As a result, the authorities can step up the vaccination program during the country’s recovery.

So far, more than 62 million people, about 4.5 percent of the country’s population, have been fully vaccinated, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
