Vaccination obligation for children from 5 years old in New York

Children between 5 and 11 years old must have had one shot before December 14. Those who are not vaccinated cannot go to restaurants or extracurricular activities. Children from 12 years old must be fully vaccinated from December 27.

First American City

New York is the first American city to apply the strict rules. At least 34,000 people have died from the effects of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic and Mayor Bill de Blasio fears the omikron variant of the virus.

In addition to the vaccination requirement for children, employees of companies in New York must also be fully vaccinated from the end of this month. The measure applies not only to approximately 184,000 companies and shops, but also to visitors to restaurants, theaters and gyms, for example. For them, proof of one vaccination is now sufficient.

National policy

President Joe Biden nationwide does not want to go as far as New York. He planned to give employees in companies with more than 100 employees until January 4 to be fully vaccinated, but that decision has so far been blocked by a court.

De Blasio will be succeeded next year by his Democratic party colleague Eric Adams. He also says he is very concerned about the omikron variant, which has also been identified in New York and may be more contagious. He advises administrators from other cities and states to adopt New York’s measures.

89 percent vaccinated

In New York, 89 percent of adults have had at least one shot. This also applies to more than 125,000 children aged 5 to 11 years.
