Chicago – In their last game before the fourth final of the CONCACAF Nations League, the men’s national team will face the challenge of taking on Switzerland in 16th place on May 30th in St. Gallen.

The game against Switzerland is the sixth time that USMNT has faced one of the top 20 opponents since Berhalter became head coach in 2019. Under the leadership of Arsenal midfielder Granit Schaka and Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, the Swiss are preparing for the European Championship held. In group A with four-time world champions Italy, Turkey and Wales.
“One of our priorities is to assert ourselves against the competition at the highest level. We are therefore delighted to have the opportunity to play against a good European opponent, ”said USMNT coach Greg Berhalter. “Both teams will be preparing for big tournaments so it will be a great preparation for our group as we approach summer.”
Against Switzerland
This is the third time the US has met Switzerland in the past 25 years. In the last duel, a free kick by Brek Shea led the US men’s national team to a 1-1 draw in Zurich on March 31, 2015.
It was another free kick ending that still marked the iconic moment in history between the two teams. In the USA’s inaugural game for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, 77,000 spectators at Michigan’s Pontiac Silver Dome saw a brilliant blow from Eric Winalda that resulted in a 1-1 draw and the first point for USMNT at the World Cup since 1950.
The friendly game in May will last almost 31 years until the day of the first USMNT game in St. Gallen. Bruce Murray scored the United States’ goal in a 2-1 loss to the Swiss in the team’s final on June 2, 1990, before going to the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
In general, the United States are 1-3-4 against Switzerland at all times and have not been defeated in the last four games.
The competition is coming
The game kicks off three major competitions in 2021, starting with the CONCACAF Nations League final. USMNT, the first division winner in the first division, will face Honduras in the semifinals, while Mexico and Costa Rica will meet in the other game, while the two winners battle for the title of the First Nations League. The matches will be played in the FIFA window during the first week of June, with locations and times indicated.
The following month, the United States would compete in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup in search of its seventh Confederation Championship. USMNT has been withdrawn in Group A. With Canada, Martinique and a third team, a qualifying tournament will be decided. The last time the U.S. lifted the trophy was in 2017 when Jordan Morris scored the winning goal 2-1 against Jamaica.
These games serve as the prelude to qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will host a final tournament with eight teams from September 2021.
