The Pomala Block project is the result of a collaboration between PT Vale and a Chinese company, the Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Company, or which is familiarly called Huayou. This block with an area of more than 20 thousand hectares will be divided into three parts, namely the mining area, the smelter or nickel processing plant and the port for transportation.

Subsequently, the smelter is intended to process the limonite nickel ore into Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) products. Processing of nickel is done using high pressure acid leaching or HPAL technology. The same MHP product is known to be used as a battery component, which can be used for electric vehicles.

The estimated annual production of the project is 120,000 tons of nickel and approximately 15,000 tons of cobalt contained in MHP products. The investment for this project is said to reach 4.5 billion dollars or Rp equivalent. 70.65 trillion (exchange rate of Rp. 15,700).

Previously, PT Vale also owned a number of mines and smelters on the island of Sulawesi, including the Sorowako area of South Sulawesi and Morowali Central Sulawesi.
