Users will need to consent to tracking in iOS – IT Pro – News from Spring

Users of iPhones and iPads must give permission to apps from the spring to be tracked in apps. The change has been coming for months and the feature will be in the upcoming beta of iOS, tvOS and iPadOS.

After the beta, the feature will be live in a stable version in the spring, says Apple. The function comes in addition to the ‘privacylabels‘which are already live. This is a permission request, as has been in iOS for years for the use of the camera, microphone or location. The difference is that it is now a specific permission for tracking.

Apps use tracking to build a profile of people by combining data from all kinds of apps, so that more targeted ads are possible. It is now possible to ask apps not to track via the Settings, but apps did not have to ask for permission to enable tracking.

Asking for permission should have been in iOS before. Apple was aiming for early this year. That was already a postponement compared to the original schedule. Apple wanted to give developers more time to make “necessary changes” to their apps.
