The United States tested the LWSD MK 2 MOD 0 combat laser in the Gulf of Aden. The test shot was fired at the Portland amphibious transport dock, the press service of the US Central Command reports.

On December 14, on board the warship Portland, laser weapons are reported to have successfully hit a static training target at sea.
Amphibious dock Portland had previously tested the laser in May 2020 – then it successfully eliminated drone while working in the Pacific Ocean. These were the first systemic tests of the new combat laser at sea.
Now tests have taken place in the waters of the Arabian Sea in the Middle East.
The US Navy reports that the LWSD is considered the latest generation of laser weapons systems.
- In 2019, the US Navy statedthat they plan to equip one of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers with the HELIOS laser protection system from 2021.
- In May 2020, Portland successfully destroyed unmanned aerial vehicle with laser LWSD MK 2 MOD 0.
