USA – Sanders wins Democratic primary in New Hampshire

“This win here is the beginning of the end for Donald Trump,” said 78-year-old Sanders from neighboring Vermont to cheering supporters in New Hampshire. According to US channels, Sanders in New Hampshire got 26 percent. Behind him came the moderately pragmatic applicants Pete Buttigieg (24 percent) and Amy Klobuchar (20 percent). It was followed by left-wing Senator Elizabeth Warren with nine percent and Biden, who only got eight percent.

Sanders had already caused a sensation in the Democratic primary four years ago – at that time, of course, he received 60 percent of the vote. Ultimately, however, he was inferior in the internal race to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who then lost the presidential election against Trump. Sanders moved to the current area code in New Hampshire as a favorite. He had already won there in 2016.

However, the primaries drag on for months and are fraught with uncertainties. The second area code was only used in New Hampshire. At the first vote last week in Iowa, the only 38-year-old ex-mayor Buttigieg had a surprise victory, but according to the official result, only a wafer-thin lead over Sanders. The Iowa area code has been affected by a severe technical counting error. Sanders therefore wants to have the result checked.

Biden had already suffered a severe setback in Iowa. The 77-year-old only ended up in fourth place. Biden seemed to have foreseen his renewed defeat in New Hampshire. He spent election day in South Carolina, where one of the next primaries will be held on February 29. The ex-vice president hopes that his campaign will be boosted in the southern state, relying on strong backing from African-American voters, because neither Buttigieg nor Klobuchar have been able to convince this group so far.

In contrast to Biden, the New Hampshire area code was a success for Senator Klobuchar, who, like Biden and Buttigieg, represents the moderate party wing. Your third place with 20 percent is a remarkable result. In Iowa, Klobuchar was still in fifth place behind Biden.

After the election, three other applicants threw in the towel. After the polling stations in New Hampshire closed, entrepreneurs Andrew Yang and a Senator from Colorado, Andrew Yang and Michael Bennet, initially said they would end their campaigns given their poor performance. On Wednesday, Deval Patrick, former Massachusetts governor, also announced his retirement from the race on Twitter. All three Democrats in New Hampshire had only achieved a vote in the lower single-digit percentage range, Patrick and Bennet even only below one percent.

Media billionaire Michael Bloomberg is one of the remaining Democratic presidential applicants. However, he chose an unusual strategy and skipped the first area codes. The 77-year-old wants to concentrate on the so-called Super Tuesday on March 3, which is also the time for primaries in 14 countries.

At the beginning of the area code in New Hampshire, Bloomberg was nevertheless able to land a small surprise success: in the hamlet of Dixville Notch in the north of the state, where the votes cast by the five voters were counted right after midnight, the billionaire won surprisingly – although his name was not printed on the ballot was found. The founder of the financial news agency of the same name has so far spent more than $ 250 million (€ 229.34 million) in the election campaign.

The primaries will continue until June. In July, the Democrats will officially nominate their candidate for the November presidential election at a party convention.

The Democrats have been arguing about the basic political approach for months. The left, “progressive” wing is represented by Sanders and Warren. They are campaigning for higher taxes for the rich, the abolition of private health insurance in favor of a state system and stricter control of corporations and the financial sector. Her moderate party colleagues such as Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Biden consider this to be too radical and fear that this will deter major voters of the center in November. The idea of Sanders as a presidential candidate has now given the democratic establishment “a certain amount of panic,” said democratic adviser Joel Payne.

US President Donald Trump, as expected in Iowa, won the Republicans by a wide margin in New Hampshire due to the lack of a real competitor.
