USA: Kennedy defeated in the primaries. First family member to lose in his home state

The Massachusetts primaries process has been closely followed, as all seats, both in the Senate and the House of Representatives, traditionally go to the Democratic candidate.

The race that had raised the most expectations was the fight of Kennedy, currently a member of the Lower House, for Markey’s place in the Senate, which has held the post since 2013.

Markey received the support of Warren, who, like him, is a Massachusetts senator, and other Democrats closer to social democracy, such as Ocasio-Cortez, with increasing popularity, despite being only 30 years old and little more and a half years of experience in the Congress.

In contrast, Kennedy, 39, had received support from the Democratic majority leader in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

Ocasio-Cortez was quick to congratulate Markey on the victory “to the progressive movement, to the policies of the 21st century and to the ‘Green New Deal’”, on the social network Twitter, in reference to the great pact they propose to face climate change.

The moderate wing of the party is giving way to a movement aligned with social democracy, led by Senator Bernie Sanders, who in both 2016 and 2020 tried to win the Democratic presidential candidacy.
