USA, Donald Trump | Much worse than expected for Trump

The number of new Americans requesting unemployment benefits is much higher than expected.

The latest figures from the US statistical authorities show that the number of new applications for unemployment benefits last week – jobless claims – amounted to 1,106,0000.

The experts the news agency Bloomberg had spoken to expected, on average, that the number of new first-time applicants for social security would fall from last week’s revised figures of 971,000 to 925,000.

Setback

The latest figures are therefore a new setback for President Donald Trump and a reopening of the US economy. Seasonally adjusted unemployment in the US is now at 10.2 per cent, which is a slight decrease from last week’s figures.

A total of 28 million Americans now receive some form of unemployment benefit.

And even if the number a week ago was surprisingly low, it is still sky high above the figures before the corona crisis started in March. The previous record was set back in 1982, when 695,000 applied for first-time benefits during the economic downturn in 1982.

Relief

Despite new outbreaks and outbreaks of coronary heart disease, particularly in the south and west of the United States, there are general easing of restrictions and the shutdown of the US economy. In states such as Texas and Arizona, the number of new cases of infection is on the decline.

Nearly 15.5 million Americans currently receive social security for a minimum of two weeks, so-called continuing claims. In the last 22 weeks, a staggering 57 million Americans have asked for unemployment benefits to make ends meet.

The pendulum can quickly swing back again, but last week’s number of new applicants for unemployment benefits was for the first time since 20 March this year below 1 million.

The case is being updated.
