Jacob Blake, 29, is in the hospital. His condition is stable.
On Sunday, the man was shot by the police. At least seven shots in the back were fired in its direction. The footage of the incident shows at least one of the three police officers present at the scene opening fire to Blake entering his car.
There were three of Blake’s sons in the car while the shots were fired, according to local media reports. The family of the shot man believes that before the incident he tried to ease a dispute between two people about the scratching of the car.
As with George Floyd, who was killed by police in late May in Minneapolis, the video of the incident quickly became popular on social media, prompting violent protests. In Kenosha, located between Chicago and Milwaukee, an outraged crowd smashed shop windows and set fire to cars on Sunday night. Attempts were made to set fire to the courthouse. The city center was closed on Monday; the previous day’s damage was repaired. On the night of Monday to Tuesday, the curfew will apply again. To ensure security, units of the National Guard were sent to the city at the request of local authorities.
“We do not have all the details, but we certainly know that this was not the first black person to be shot, injured or ruthlessly killed at the hands of the security services of our state or country,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said in a statement. At the same time, he called for peaceful protests and the wearing of face masks.
The shooting of Blake is under investigation by the Wisconsin Justice Department.
Officers who attended the shooting of Jacob Blake were temporarily removed from service. This is standard procedure in the US for such incidents.
