“China appears to be moving from a period of complacency with the status quo over Taiwan to a period where they are more impatient and more prepared to test boundaries and tease the idea of unification,” an unnamed senior US government official told reporters. According to the official, the new US government has been monitoring Beijing’s behavior for the past two months before making such a conclusion.
The official said the Joe Biden administration is concerned that China’s president is seeing progress capstone in Taiwan as important for legitimacy and legacy.
“It seems he is ready to take more risks,” the official said.
White House senior official for Asia, Kurt Campbell, also told Financial Times that compared to other policy areas, China was the most assertive in its approach to Taiwan.
“We have never seen a more persistent and definite activity than military, diplomatic and other activities directed at Taiwan,” he said.
