US vehicle production grows in North America

In 2021, the production of motor vehicles of USA of cars and light trucks exceeded 13.1 million units, reaching 69% of the total production of North America.

This is the highest percentage of North American production in a decade, according to the American Automotive Policy Council (AAPCby its acronym in English).

Thus, according to the AAPC, it is important to appreciate the enormous role that the automobile industry plays in the North American economy and in trade between the parties to the Agreement between MexicoUnited States and Canada (T-MEC).

The following production, production, sales and employment data highlights the enormous economic and employment impact of the US and North American automotive sector.

For one thing, US auto manufacturing output (over $637 billion in 2020) accounted for 11.5% of total US manufacturing output.

Likewise, also in 2021, sales in the United States totaled 15.1 million vehicles, representing about 85% of total North American sales, a constant level for more than a decade.

The industry is directly and indirectly responsible for 10.3 million American jobs (more than 8% of all private sector jobs in the United States).

The AAPC believes that the automotive sector’s impressive job-creating capacity (i.e. a job multiplier of 11) derives from its long and exceptionally complex supply chains, with links back and forth beginning with basic products, such as steel and aluminum, and end up in the more than 16,600 dealers located in all 50 states of the United States.

The AAPC represents the common public policy interests of the American automobile manufacturers Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company y Stellantis.
