Biden’s decision to authorize the handover of the new system came just a day after Russiafired missiles at Kyiv. The Russians shelled the capital at the same time that the G7 summit in Germany began.
According to the NYT source, the equipment will be paid for with emergency funding allocated by Congress to help Ukraine.
Sullivan also noted that during the video link, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the G7 for defenses against Russian airstrikes similar to yesterday’s attack on Kyiv.
