US to buy NASAMS advanced air defense system for Ukraine

The decision will be announced within a week.

US President Joe Biden’s administration is expected to announce this week that it is sending Ukraine an advanced air defense system. NASAMS (or Norwegian Anti-Aircraft Missile System, NZRK).

This is reported The New York Times with reference to an official familiar with the decision.

According to officials, the Biden administration will buy Ukraine an advanced medium-to-long-range NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system that will allow Ukraine to defend its forces from long distances.

Biden’s decision to authorize the handover of the new system came just a day after Russia fired missiles at Kyiv. The Russians shelled the capital at the same time that the G7 summit in Germany began.

According to the NYT source, the equipment will be paid for with emergency funding allocated by Congress to help Ukraine.

As UNIAN reported, during the G7 summit, Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser, told reporters that the United States intend to “finalize a package that includes advanced air defense systems medium and long range for Ukrainians.” He did not provide further details or name any specific system.

Sullivan also noted that during the video link, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the G7 for defenses against Russian airstrikes similar to yesterday’s attack on Kyiv.

As UNIAN wrote, CNN previously reported that Ukrainian officials requested a missile defense system known as the NASAMS system. These same systems protect Washington and the area around the US capital.
