NOS News

The latest US arms shipment to Ukraine includes missiles with a range of 150 kilometers. Reuters news agency and The Wall Street Journal heard from sources. The missiles currently in use in Ukraine can hit targets up to 80 kilometers away. The White House declined to comment.

The GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) is an American-Swedish-made GPS-guided missile. It can direct an explosive charge of about 250 pounds at a target with great precision. Like the missiles that Ukraine is now deploying, the GLSDB can be fired from the Himars launch system.

The US government is expected to announce its decision to send longer-range missiles to Ukraine this week. It is not known when Ukraine will have access to the new weapon. According to The Wall Street Journal, co-producer Boeing has the missile in stock. The new missiles enable Ukraine to strike further behind Russian lines, for example to disrupt supplies and the supply of troops.

Russia warned in September that the US would cross a red line if it delivered missiles with a range of more than 50 miles to Ukraine.

Ukraine has asked the US for ATACMS missiles with a range of 300 kilometers. These can also be fired with the Himars launch system. That request has so far been rejected.

Ukraine is also expected to receive more equipment for the maintenance of the Patriot anti-aircraft systems and more ammunition, including Javelin anti-tank weapons.
