US Senate to vote on Barrett as Supreme Court member on Monday | Abroad

The United States Senate will vote next Monday on the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett as the ninth member of the Supreme Court. It was previously expected that Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell would present the nomination to the 100 senators next Friday.

The Senate Legal Committee will hold a vote on Thursday. The Democrats consider it more appropriate to decide on an appointment after the presidential election, but they do not have a majority in the Senate.

The highest court in the US has temporarily only eight members since the death of Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last month. If the very conservative Barrett is appointed, the Supreme Court will have six justices of Republican signature, further strengthening the conservative majority.

Approval

McConnell said last week that he expects the legal committee to approve Barrett’s nomination. The entire Senate will then vote after the weekend. Not all 53 Republican senators have said they will vote for Barrett.

The appointment is important because the Supreme Court has the final legal say on controversial topics such as abortion, possession of weapons and immigration. It may also be asked for a judgment if the outcome of the elections is contested.

When the coronavirus broke out among White House employees in early October, it was initially thought that Barrett’s appointment would be delayed. However, the legal committee dealing with the nomination wanted there know nothing about it.
