US Senate almost agrees to appoint Judge Amy Coney Barrett

The Judiciary Committee in the United States Senate has approved the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett (48) for a seat on the Supreme Court. The twelve Republican members voted in favor, the ten Democrats boycotted the vote. They accuse Republicans of trying to push through the nomination of the conservative Barrett for the November 3 presidential election.

The results pave the way for a debate on the nomination and final vote, possibly as early as Monday. As the Republicans hold more than half the seats, Barrett’s inauguration is set before November 3.

That could be the deciding factor, particularly among conservative Christians, to vote for President Trump in the presidential election, who has nominated.

The leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, describes the nomination process as a “sham from the beginning.” He defended the boycott of his party members, arguing that they do not want to give the process legitimacy.

Six Conservative Judges

Barrett takes the place in the Supreme Court of Ruth Bader Ginsbrug, known as progressive, who last month died. Barrett is the third Conservative judge to be nominated by Trump.

The Supreme Court then counts six judges who are considered conservative and three judges who are considered progressive. As judges are appointed for life, the court will hold a conservative majority for years to come.

That will affect legislation on issues on which Republicans and Democrats have profound differences of opinion, such as abortion and health insurance for all.
