“I would like to have a free trade agreement with Switzerland.” That said US President Donald Trump to the Swiss and US media at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Tuesday. “Let’s see what is possible,” he added before starting a conversation with representatives of the Federal Council.
In May 2019, Trump had already talked to the then Federal President Ueli Maurer about trade between the two countries.
The current Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga added to the press that she also wanted to talk to the US President about this topic, but that climate change and Switzerland’s culture would also be discussed.
She said that the Federal Presidium in Switzerland would be passed on to a different Federal Council every year. This ensures that all languages and parts of the country as well as both genders are represented alternately in the government. The US President commented on this with a “Very good”.
Trump did not mention Switzerland’s representation mandate for relations with Iran. The Confederation represents the United States’ diplomatic interests in Iran since Tehran and Washington have had no diplomatic relations for more than 40 years.
A government delegation from Iran should have originally participated in this year’s WEF. Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Sarif’s visit was planned. But the Iranians canceled their visit to Davos last week.
