“I can confirm that the RC-135W aircraft did fly over northern Taiwan yesterday as part of a routine mission,” the US Air Force Pacific’s public affairs department said in a statement published by the military news website The War Zone.
“Due to operational security, we were unable to discuss the specifics of the mission,” he said.
But on Friday the confession suddenly changed course. One of the senior US officers denied the existence of the flight.

Collin Koh, a researcher at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, said it was unlikely that the US plane had flown over Taipei mistakenly.
“It is one of the most advanced reconnaissance platforms in the world,” he said.
