US operator Intelsat, new champion of in-flight Internet services

Although placed under Chapter 11 protection of US bankruptcy law, the satellite telecommunications giant has acquired the Commercial Aviation arm of Gogo, the leading in-flight Internet service provider.

Financial restructuring in progress

We remember that last May the American operator of geostationary telecommunications satellites Intelsat and some of its subsidiaries had been placed under the protection of Chapter 11 of the American law on bankruptcies.

The objective was to restructure the finances, weighed down by a this amounting to $ 14.7 billion.

The request was not for Intelsat General, which serves US commercial, government and military customers.

Nice catch of war

Despite everything, Intelsat was able to acquire the branch Commercial aviation of American society Gogo, created in 1991 and has since become a leader in the in-flight connectivity.

The transaction, which was finalized on December 2, is worth $ 400 million.

Gogo’s Commercial Aviation branch thus becomes a division of Intelsat, but its personnel, structure and location in Chicago remain unchanged.

The acquisition will, according to Oakleigh Thorne, Chairman of Gogo, “create the world’s first vertically integrated in-flight company.”

Gogo now equips more than 3,000 planes, on behalf of 21 different airlines, including nine of the 20 main ones around the world.
