dabrowski & Routliffe Capture Second US Open women’s Doubles Title
Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe secured the US Open Women’s Doubles title on Friday, defeating top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium’s center court. This marks the second time in three years the duo has triumphed in new York, overcoming the tournament favorites to claim the championship.Townsend entered the tournament ranked number one in the WTA Doubles rankings, just ahead of Siniakova, a veteran with 30 career doubles titles, including 10 Grand Slam victories.Despite this, the third-seeded Dabrowski and Routliffe proved too strong, clinching the victory when a Townsend lob sailed long.
The win is notably poignant for Dabrowski, who recently completed treatment for breast cancer. She had postponed part of her treatment to compete at Wimbledon last year, where she and Routliffe reached the final but lost to Townsend and Siniakova in a tight match, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1).
“What an unbelievable journey, we whent through so many things together,” Dabrowski shared with Routliffe during the trophy presentation. “I am extremely grateful to be here today by your side as a champion. It means everything to me. Thank you for staying near me. Thank you for your support,” added the Ottawa native.
Routliffe, who holds dual citizenship and represents New Zealand internationally while residing in Montreal, also acknowledged the excited crowd. “There were really a lot of people today to encourage women’s doubles, and we loved every moment,” she said.
Dabrowski and Routliffe become the fifth team in the professional era to win at least two US Open women’s doubles titles, sharing a prize purse of $1 million.
This victory adds to Dabrowski’s impressive Grand Slam record, which already includes two Mixed Doubles titles: the 2017 French Open with Rohan Bopanna and the 2018 Australian Open alongside Mate Pavic.
The final saw Dabrowski and Routliffe initially take control, breaking Townsend and Siniakova to lead 4-2 in the first set. While they briefly relinquished the break in the ninth game, they immediately regained it to close out the first set in 41 minutes.
The second set began with a strong run from Dabrowski and Routliffe, winning the first three games. Townsend and Siniakova responded with three games of their own, leading to a tightly contested stretch where both pairs held serve until the decisive tenth game.
Townsend and Siniakova were seeking to add the US Open title to their recent successes at Wimbledon last year and the Australian open earlier this January. However, Dabrowski and Routliffe proved too consistent, securing their second US Open crown.
