Joe Biden announced on the 2nd (local time) that it would sanction Russian personnel, institutions, and businesses related to attempts to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalni. As a result of this, interest is also drawn to the political opponents who have opposed Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past. Most of them died in mysterious events or retired from politics.

Former Russian Congressman Denis Voronenko, who opposed Putin’s push for a merger on the Crimean Peninsula, fled to Ukraine in 2017. Later he was assassinated in the capital Kiev. At the time, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko condemned it as “terrorism of the Russian government.” The Ukrainian Ministry of Interior also identified a Russian intelligence agent as the culprit.

In 2016, the leader of the People’s Liberal Party Mikhail Kashanov, who led the anti-Putin camp at the time, was engulfed in a controversy over the’sex video’. The video of Kashanov having sex with his lover at the time was publicly reported on the news by the Russian state broadcaster. Although not illegal, Kashanov had to be embarrassed. Criticism arose over this, saying, “If Putin is trying to end his political life, he does not hide anything.” In 2015, former Russian deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemchev, who led the Russian opposition at the time, was shot and killed near the Kremlin, the presidential palace. This has emerged as an international issue. It was also revealed that Nemchev planned a massive anti-government rally in Moscow just before his death. For this reason, the Western world accused Putin of being behind Nemchev’s assassination. In 2007, Nemchev was once imprisoned along with other opposition leaders. The person who confronted Putin in 2003 was Mikhail Khodorkowski, president of Yukos, Russia’s largest oil company. He was the representative figure of Oligarch, a group of’Mafia chaebol’ in Russia. His assets alone were estimated at 9 trillion won. Hodorkovsky confronted Putin with his powerful assets and organizational power. A documentary film about his actions was also promoted, but before the opening of the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, the film was stolen. After losing his fight against Putin, he was imprisoned, pardoned, and then moved to Switzerland to declare political retirement.

Boris Berezowski, a former Russian congressman and a media conglomerate who owned the ORT broadcasting station, is also one of the representative Fujin’s statics. In 2000, for ORT’s flagship program, the Krem Ingung ordered to stop broadcasting. Berezovsky was found dead in London, England in 2013. It was speculated that he was killed by the Russian government at the time.

For this reason, foreign media’s attention is also drawn to the fate of Navalni and his wife Julia, who have been confronted with Putin most recently. All of Putin’s former opponents faced a tragic end. Even then, the international community tried to protect Putin’s opponents, but the results were not good.

However, there are also observations that the pattern will be different this time. Most of all, the support for Navalni in Russia is not strong. Last month, a large rally in support of Navalni was held across Russia, and more than 3,000 people were arrested.

Public opinion in the international community is also rising. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is pursuing a gas pipeline connection project with Russia, has recently been criticized by domestic public opinion. It is pointed out that business with Russia that suppresses Navalni should be stopped. In this situation, some observers say that political and diplomatic burdens will be imposed for the Russian government to openly remove Navalni.
