Washington D.C. – The Senate is scheduled to hold its 15th vote to end the ongoing US government shutdown, as the impasse stretches into record territory. The shutdown, which began in 2025, continues to disrupt federal services and fuels political tensions in Washington.
Recent polls indicate the GOP is receiving more blame for the shutdown than Democrats. Some Republicans have cautioned against conceding to Democratic demands, fearing a backlash from newly energized voters.
“I think there will be some pretty substantial damage done to a Democratic brand that has been rehabilitated, if, on the heels of an election in which the people told us to keep fighting, we immediately stop fighting, if we surrender without having gotten anything,” Democratic Senator Chris Murphy told Punchbowl News.
Former president Trump acknowledged the political risk for his party, telling Republican senators on Wednesday that the shutdown was “negative for Republicans.” He has urged them to abolish the Senate’s filibuster, arguing it is indeed crucial for future republican success.”If Republicans kill the Filibuster, they sail to Victory for many years to come. If they don’t, DISASTER waiting to happen!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday.
Though, Senator John Thune has stated that his party’s lawmakers do not currently support eliminating the filibuster, which requires 60 votes to advance most legislation.
