US floods Mexico with 119,000 weapons; 36% are rifles or assault rifles

United States authorities recovered in Mexico an annual average of 17 thousand weapons in the last decade.

This year, 3,764 firearms have been seized in the country from January to June, according to a security report.

In ten years, United States authorities recovered in Mexico a total of 169,790 firearms, mainly confiscated from criminal groups or used in violent acts, such as the Friday attack against Omar Garcia Harfuch, CDMX Secretary of Citizen Security.

According to data from the United States Agency for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), 70% of that total of weapons recovered between 2009 and 2018 came to our country via the US, it is say, 118 thousand 994 pieces.

The most recent version of the Firearms Tracking System report, prepared periodically by the ATF’s Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information, indicates that most of the weapons insured in crimes committed in Mexican territory were manufactured or imported into the United States, while that the remainder was manufactured in other countries or its origin cannot be determined.

Tracing weapons by ATF is a lengthy process that includes identifying the model, caliber, and serial number of the part, as well as locating the manufacturer or distributor that sold it, including federal licensees, wholesalers, or retailers.

The report details that in 2009 14 thousand 604 weapons manufactured or imported in the United States were recovered; 7,345 in 2010; 16,028 in 2011; 13,722 in 2012; 11 thousand 133 in 2013; 11,521 in 2014; 12,721 in 2015; nine thousand 559 in 2016; ten thousand 855 in 2017 and 11 thousand 506 in 2018.

After the ATF allowed 2,500 weapons to be illegally purchased and transported to Mexico in 2009, under the Fast and Furious operation, the US authorities continue to track and recover weapons that arrive in our country.

Among the almost 170 thousand recovered firearms are pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns and other types, which can be machine guns, destructive devices, flares, flare guns, tear gas launchers, silencers or any other type of weapon.

The pistols dominate by quantity in the report, with 72 thousand 936 pieces, 43% of the total. They are followed by rifles or assault rifles, with 60 thousand 858 (36%); revolvers, with 21,059 (12.5%); 11 thousand 300 shotguns (6.5%) and three thousand 639 of other types (2%).

So far this year, federal forces have issued major seizures to criminal groups.

A security report details that from January to June, 3,363 suspected criminals, 10,465 land vehicles, 17 aircraft, 23 vessels, 3,764 firearms, 550,151 cartridges, 11,724 chargers, 240 grenades, 23 laboratories and two runways, in addition to five million 506 thousand 327 dollars and 63 million 251 thousand 704 pesos.

An arsenal against García Harfuch

The four cells that participated in the attack against the convoy of the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) used an arsenal of high-powered weapons of different caliber and explosives that were secured by the CDMX Attorney General’s Office.

At a press conference, the agency’s spokesman, Ulises Lara, explained that after the criminal acts, a grenade launcher, 34 long weapons, eight short weapons, seven fragmentation grenades, five Barret rifles, 39 vests, 51 Molotov bombs, were seized. 96 chargers and 2 thousand 805 cartridges.

In this attack, which lasted for at least five minutes, 414 casings of different calibers were hit and 13 vehicles were also insured, which were presumably used to commit this crime.

According to sources close to the investigation, at least 50 hits from high-powered rifles penetrated the armor of the truck in which Omar García Harfuch was traveling.

The bullets targeted Rafael O. and Edgar G., chief of escorts and one of the closest custodians to the SSC Secretary, one of them was driving the vehicle and the other was a co-pilot, while the officer was traveling in the rear, according to SSC sources that were consulted.

Ulises Lara reiterated that so far 19 people recruited in various states and one of Colombian nationality, until yesterday were declaring before the Public Ministry.

In the CDMX, other arsenals have been secured, such as the one on February 12, when the most numerous and “powerful” seizure was made, due to the high-powered caliber of the weapons found in a house in the Lindavista neighborhood, Gustavo’s mayor’s office. A. Madero.
