US elections 2020, in which states can Trump ask for a recount? – Corriere.it

Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential elections for now hanging 6,000 votes in Pennsylvania, to which 1,000 would be added in Georgia, 11,000 in Nevada and 47,000 in Arizona. These are small numbers and, for this reason, this victory could take several days to become official.

Appealing to the narrow margin, Donald Trump has already asked for a recount in Michigan (where Biden has a lead of 146,000 votes, 3%) e Wisconsin (the advantage instead of 20 thousand votes, 0.6%), and most likely will ask for it in each of the other states. (who our interactive electoral map).

For the recount for the rules vary from state to state:

• In Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar obliged by law to call a recount by 12 November if the margin is less than 0.5% of the votes. Biden has a 0.1% lead for now. The second count should be completed by 24 November. When we reached 95% of the count, about sixty hours after the polls closed, the former vice president has 5,587 votes ahead of Trump.

• In Arizona state law requires a mandatory recount when the difference between the two candidates is less than 1% of the votes. For now of 1.5 points in favor of Biden who, with the count still at 90%, has a margin of 47,052 votes.

• In Nevada Those who lose the elections can request a second count within three business days, regardless of the margin, but must cover the cost of the operations. If he were to win, the sum would be returned. I still count it at 89%, Biden’s advantage of 22,000 votes, 1.77%.

• In Georgia a candidate can request a recount, but only if the margin is less than 0.5% of the votes. At the moment, Biden’s is 0.1%. The former vice president now has – with the count reached 98% – a margin of 1,097 votes.

• In Michigan automatic recount if the margin between the two candidates is a maximum of 2,000 votes. A candidate can apply for it within two days if he claims to have been a victim of fraud, and to have a legitimate chance of winning the election. Biden has a lead of 146,000 votes, 3%.

• In Wisconsin, state law allows a candidate to request a recount when the margin is less than 1%. Biden for now at 0.6%, with 20,000 votes ahead.

Trump can therefore ask for a recount of the votes in any state, except in Arizona: although Nate Silver, one of the foremost US political experts and founder of the fivethirtyeight site, points out that recounting can usually shift the result when I throw it away by hundreds, sometimes thousands of votes: not tens of thousands.

If the laws vary from state to state, at the federal level the deadline for settling any dispute on the count set at 8 December – so there would still be a month and two days – because on December 14 the electoral college of the United States meets to ratify the election of the American president, who will be sworn in on January 20, 2021.
