US elections 2020, Biden the “survivor”: so he was reborn after human tragedies and falls in politics

Having survived himself, his human tragedies, political failures, Joe Biden, coming out of the oblivion to which he had resigned himself four years ago, when you let Hillary Clinton free, comes one step away from that presidency for which he put himself in run several times, the first 32 years ago, always being beaten.

A goal, almost a political obsession, cultivated for a lifetime. 1964: 21-year-old Joe, on vacation in the Bahamas, appears to the guests he converses with at a resort as a bright and ambitious young man. He will become a senator before he reaches 30 and then he will be president explains his girlfriend Neilia to everyone. Biden was elected senator at the age of 29 but a few days later Neilia, who in the meantime became his wife and gave him three children, died in a car accident along with little Naomi. The sufferings, the tragedies that have punctuated the life of the democratic candidate, have also tempered him, have fueled his empathy, pushing him to identify with the tragedies of others.

the luckiest and most unfortunate person I’ve ever met, says Ted Kaufman, a friend of his who was also his cabinet chief. Not only the family tragedy of 1972: five years ago he also lost his beloved son Beau, his political heir, killed by brain cancer. But then there is also a political career that lasted half a century, the presidency of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, eight years in the White House as Obama’s deputy.

And now, at 77, he can make his dream come true. But not as he would have liked. He wanted to be an acclaimed leader while now, even if he becomes president, he will be perceived as a fished out character, one who rises from the three previous failures thanks to the Trump emergency. He himself had resigned himself to leaving the scene after running unsuccessfully in several primaries. He had passed the baton to Beau, nicknamed Joe 2.0, who had started a brilliant political career. When the disease killed her, Biden thought about getting back on track, but then gave up so as not to cut Hillary Clinton’s way. The election of the former first lady was to put an end to Biden’s career for good. Paradoxically it was the cyclone Trump – the man of darkness, as he defined it tonight, accepting the nomination – to relaunch it.

From the stage of the convention Biden spoke more about human skills than programs, he used his personal and family history as an electoral weapon. Cynical speculation? Not really: Joe was recognized by the Republican party as the anti-Trump not for his political views, but for his tenacity, endurance, dignity and empathy. All qualities that make him the most formidable opponent for the president among those that the left could have fielded. A reassuring moderate, already extensively tested and that does not scare anyone, in which both the independents and the conservatives tired of Trump’s narcissism and his poor results as a man of government can recognize themselves.

Other progressive candidates had more compelling programs than his. But Biden was with the one with the greatest chance of giving people what they need most today: the return to normalcy, however tiring and unsatisfactory, after four years of nightmare. To stop him, Trump has found nothing better than to accuse him of being senile, no longer at the height of his mental faculties, in the bala of the party’s radical left. With his lucid, determined speech, free of uncertainties, vain promises and captivating smiles, Biden tried to dismantle the arguments of his opponent.
